Is using an AI interview copilot allowed? What live copilots do, and the risk

A live interview copilot is an app that listens to a real interview and shows you suggested answers while you speak. Final Round AI, LockedIn AI, Interview Sidekick and Verve AI all sell one. Unless the employer says AI is allowed, assume it is not. Anthropic's candidate guidance bars AI in live interviews unless it says otherwise, and Amazon makes candidates agree not to use unauthorized tools. anthropic.com techcrunch.com

What do live interview copilots do?

We read each vendor's own pages. Most describe the same mechanism: the app hears the interviewer's question, writes an answer from your resume and the job description, and shows it on a screen the interviewer is not meant to see.

Final Round AIAn assistant that listens to your live interview and privately streams a short answer. Verve AILive transcription and suggested answers, with a code interpreter for coding rounds.A transparent UI and camouflage mode in its desktop app.vervecopilot.com

What do employers say about AI in interviews?

  • Anthropic asks candidates not to use AI in live interviews or take-home tests unless it says AI is allowed for that task. It encourages AI for preparation: researching the company, practicing answers, drafting questions. anthropic.com
  • Amazon told TechCrunch that candidates must agree not to use unauthorized tools during interviews. techcrunch.com Business Insider reported that Amazon gave recruiters guidelines for spotting candidates who use AI, saying it gives an unfair advantage. aol.com
  • Goldman Sachs told campus recruits that outside sources, including ChatGPT and Google search, are banned during interviews, according to Fortune. A spokesperson said the firm wants to hear applicants in their own voice. fortune.com
  • Google and McKinsey are adding in-person rounds. Sundar Pichai said Google is bringing back at least one in-person interview round, as reported by Entrepreneur, citing the Wall Street Journal. entrepreneur.com
  • Meta went the other way for some roles: 404 Media reported it planned coding interviews where candidates may use an AI assistant. 404media.co That is AI the employer offers in the open, not a hidden copilot.

Can interview platforms detect a copilot?

The platforms that host coding interviews describe signals, not proof.

  • HackerRank flags AI use on tests that forbid it, using code patterns, time spent, copy and paste, and tab switching. Its help center puts the model's precision at 85% and asks reviewers to check each flag; its marketing page claims 93% accuracy. hackerrank-knowledge-base.help.usepylon.com hackerrank.com
  • CoderPad alerts interviewers when a candidate pastes outside code or leaves the editor, and records playback. It does not claim to detect outside AI directly. coderpad.io
  • Codility compares submissions with known AI-generated solutions and watches copy and paste and tab switches, for a human to review. codility.com
  • Karat lists six warning signs, among them glancing off screen, code that appears in one pass with no iteration, and explanations that do not match the code. karat.com
  • HireVue runs identity checks, browser-focus tracking and copy-paste limits, and tells candidates which checks apply. hirevue.com

Detection is imperfect in both directions. The bigger risk is the follow-up question. Karat's warning signs come down to one thing: an answer you cannot explain. karat.com An interviewer who asks "why that approach?" is testing exactly what a copilot cannot supply.

What happened to Interview Coder's founder?

Roy Lee built Interview Coder, a tool that showed answers in a window interviewers could not see, and says he used it to get an Amazon internship offer. He says Columbia suspended him; he later co-founded Cluely, which raised a $5.3 million seed round to "cheat on everything". techcrunch.com Cluely's home page now calls it an undetectable AI for meetings and no longer mentions interviews. cluely.com

What should you do instead?

  1. Practice with AI as much as you like. Our picks are all practice tools.
  2. Ask the recruiter whether AI is allowed in each round, especially take-home tests.
  3. If you need an accommodation, ask early. Anthropic's guidance tells candidates to raise it with their recruiter. anthropic.com
  4. If AI is allowed, use it in the open, as Meta's format intends.

Questions

Is using an AI interview copilot cheating?
If the employer has not said AI is allowed, most treat hidden real-time help as cheating. Anthropic's guidance says no AI in live interviews unless it says otherwise, Goldman Sachs told campus recruits ChatGPT is banned during interviews, and Amazon makes candidates agree not to use unauthorized tools.
Can employers detect interview copilots?
Not with certainty, and the platforms say so. HackerRank's own help page puts its AI detection model's precision at 85% and asks reviewers to verify flags. CoderPad and Karat rely on indirect signals and follow-up questions. Vendors that claim to be undetectable are making a claim no one has verified.
Is it OK to use AI to prepare for an interview?
Yes, for most employers. Anthropic's guidance encourages candidates to use AI to research the company, practice answers and draft questions.
